"International Security in a Changing World"

This International conference brings together students, faculty, administrators and experts in distance learning from 10 Russian regional universities participating in the Initiative on Distance Learning (IDL). The conference is organized by the Stanford Institute for International Studies at Stanford University and hosted by Yaroslavl State University. First Annual SIIS/IDL Student Conference marks the three year anniversary of program’s operations in Russia.

Participation

All students who participated in any of SIIS/IDL courses offered in 2000-2003 are welcome to submit a research paper under one of the subtopics, including:
• International Security: New Challenges and Solutions
• Environmental Security: Global Tasks and Local Responses
• Facing Terrorism: Security Responses and Civil Liberties
* above subtopics outline main directions of the conference. Students’ papers should not be titled using the topics above but state their own topics under this general guidelines.

Language

Both Russian and English language will be used during the conference. Papers could be written in either Russian or English. Papers which are written in Russian should be accompanied by English translation. It is recommended that presentations at the conference be done in English, using Power Point slides or other visual aids. Presentations in Russia will be allowed in exceptional cases only.

Procedure

In order to participate in the competition, students have to submit a 1 page proposal, indicating the topic for the research paper and outlining the direction of its main arguments. Each proposal should contain contact information: name, address, phone number and e-mail address. Proposals should be submitted by e-mail to idl_conference@yahoo.com or on-line

Deadlines

The deadline for submission of proposals is June 20, 2003. All students who submitted a written proposal by deadline may participate in the paper competition.
The deadline for paper submission is August 15, 2003.
Decisions will be made by September 15, 2003.
