Three new universities join SIIS/IDL in the Fall of 2002

The SIIS Initiative on Distance Learning is expanding its presence in Russia by inviting three new regional universities to participate in the program beginning fall quarter 2002. After a careful selection process, SIIS/IDL is pleased to welcome Amur State University (Blagoveshchensk), Tymen State University, and Moscow Higher School of Economics. All of our new partners were excited about the opportunity to explore crucial topics of contemporary international security offered by the program and expressed an interest in utilizing distance learning technologies.

Amur State University, located in the Far Eastern city of Blagoveshchensk was founded in 1975 and is one of only two classical universities in this region (the other being in Vladivostok). AmurSU is a member of International and Eurasian Association of Universities and boasts 12 departments, including a newly created Department of International Relations. SIIS/IDL is pleased to welcome Mr. Nikolay Kuharenko as the program's instructor in Blagoveshchensk.

The Moscow Higher School of Economics is one of the leading institutions in Russia specializing in the field of economics, political economy and applied political science. It is a very new, but rapidly growing institution which places a strong emphasis on the professional skills of its students as well as a fundamental knowledge of the social science disciplines. SIIS/IDL works with the department of Applied Political Science, where students had to undergo a rigorous competition to sign up for the course "International Security in a Changing World". SIIS/IDL hopes to meet their expectations by offering a very academically challenging course in international security. In Moscow, the program looks forward to working with Mr. Andrei Subochev, a faculty member at the Department of Applied Political Science.

Tyumen State University (TSU), located in the city of Tyumen, was founded in 1930 and is one of the leading teaching and research Universities in the East of Russia. The university has over 14 thousand full- and part-time students which attend the main campus in Tyumen as well as 14 regional campuses located in the Tyumen region and beyond. SIIS/IDL's primary base of work at TSU is the department of History and Political Science, where a team of young and energetic faculty members are supported and encouraged by the university administration and students in exploring new methods of teaching in the social sciences. Dr. Ludmila Paschenko of the department of History and Political Science will be the course instructor.

In each of new schools, similar teaching standards will be applied as in all other SIIS/IDL participating universities. We are proud to have been able to select the best students and faculty to participate in the program, and are confident that the course of study offered by the Initiative will be beneficial for each individual student and faculty member as well as to the academic community as a whole.
